Database Corruption Issues

This quick newsletter brings sad tidings. A couple of days ago our host had a hard RAID failure on our box. Once recovered, we found that we had massive database corruption. We were able to restore a very recent backup of the drupal (content side) application. We unfortunately found that our phpBB (forum) application backup was quite old. We initially thought that we would have to roll back all the way to the Drupal From > phpBB migration (early November). However, we found that we did have a phpBB backup from mid-January.

It's been my goal this year to get one newsletter out each week. Much more time, and we end up either skipping news entries or an overly long newsletter. Was doing pretty good at getting a newsletter out each week (or a bit more), but we've missed deadlines and we're now three weeks since our last entry. We've got lots of good stuff to share:

21:9 Ultra-Widescreen at the WSGF

We have formally integrated support for 21:9 into the WSGF. We have added elements into our games database for 21:9 screenshots, support method, screen change and HUD info. We have also added the option to check that 2560x1080 was tested.

In the coming months we will set up the grading for 21:9 and begin adding medals to the site. At this point only about a dozen games have 21:9 data in them. I don't want the site to be overrun with "Incomplete" 21:9 medals, so we are going to wait until we hit a critical mass of current titles to have data.

I wanted to thank everyone for their support over the years, and this last year in particular. Believe it or not, the WSGF is entering its 10th year of existence. That's like 120 in Interweb Years, right? We've seen the PC gaming landscape change in a lot of ways, and we are doing our best to continue to serve you our community. This least year or so has been a difficult time of transition for everyone, with the migration of the site architecture and the shifting sands of our financial foundation.

We feel that we are now really on the right track from a site architecture standpoint, and are looking forward to our future. If possible, please consider donating our second and final donation drive. With your help we can go into 2013 strong, and be back self sufficient with our monthly costs.

About a week and a half ago, we sent out notice that the site was going down for maintenance and migration. The goal of the migration was to improve the site performance by migrating the Drupal forms back to phpBB3 forums, and then removing the modules we no longer needed in Drupal. I'm happy to say that the migration went quite smoothly, and much faster than what we anticipated. After much hard work our amazing team got the site back up, and started squashing bugs. If you do come across any bugs with the new forums, please post them in this forum thread. And, has hoped, the site is running much faster and will be much easier to navigate.

One of the things that we wanted to do while the site was down, was to put out a site survey to help us better guide the site in the future. The migration was so quick, I didn't have a chance to get the survey put together and posted. I've since been able to do that, and we now have a survey live at Survey Monkey. Please take a moment to let us know what you want to see out of the site.

As part of our never-ending efforts to improve your experience here on the WSGF, we will be performing a major migration and update to the site. Two years ago we moved from a variety of web platforms to a single Drupal environment. We expected that there would be issues after the migration, but we never anticipated the impacts to the site's speed and usability. And, we never anticipated that we wouldn't be able to fix any issues we were faced with. But, that is where we are at.
