If you're using the up to date Steam version of Counter Strike 1.6, then you should be able to play without stretching or losing any vertical view by simply sleecting a widescreen resolution from the menu. Sorry but a PC game titled "Alan Wake" isn't gonna sell very good here in the USA That has got to be the most lamest title I have ever heard for a PC game, lol That's the best they can do... Just to reiterate what everyone has already said - 512k is absolutely perfect for online gaming, and probably always will be. Have you ever looked at how much bandwidth is used when playing a game? VERY little! Whoever said that 512k isnt enough mustn't have a very good ISP! You wont be able to host...

Your video drivers should have an option saying "centered timings" or "fixed aspect scaling" or "1:1 scaling", simply enable this to have borders and no stretching.

Indeed that would be the perfect solution, but unfortunately ATi cards, while more powerful and cheaper than nVidia cards, dont support aspect scaling :(

Hi all,
would it be a feasible idea to run a non-widescreen game in windowed mode to avoid stretching? Would this give a big performance hit? I was thinking for example Battlefield 2.

Wow, I was actually very shocked at how good the graphics were, especially the spinning portal! And that was running on a 286?! That game would have been a best seller is theyd have released it back then. Now it's just another FPS.
