I'm using a Gigabyte GeForce 5500 (N55256D) (nVidia) via DVI to my just-purchased-today Viewsonic VX2025wm. I downloaded the latest driver for the video card from Gigabyte website.

Now when I right-click desktop, properties, settings and try to change screen res, the max I can change to is 1280x1024!

Is there something I'm doing wrong? I've installed drivers for the monitor from the supplied CD...

:welcome

You can try to add the res yourself. Take a look in this tut for a how-to: http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/wiki/index.php?title=Nvidia:_Add_Custom_Desktop_Resolution

older cards do not support higher resolution over DVI. switch to Analog and see if you still have this problem, yours might be limited to 1280x1024 over DVI, mine is limited to 1600x1200 over DVI, however analog I can pull higher resolutions fine.

You may need to use analog until you get a better graphic card.

oh, and :welcome

skeeder, I agree with you on the supposedly highest dvi res at 1600x1200. If it wasn't for our almighty PS I would have wrote the same thing as you(I have before).

I'll just say that all the cards I've used DVI with, bar my X1900, have said the max DVI res supported it 1600x1200. All have been perfectly happy at 1680x1050 and 1920x1200.

For the record, thats:
FireGL 8800
Radeon 9000
Radeon 9500 Pro
GeForce 5900XT
GeForce 6800GT
GeForce 6800GS

The X1900 is a dual DVI card, so supports up to 2560x1600 officially.

He has an FX series card so it is possible he can get 1680x1050 like PS. Interesting to find out.

EDIT: Read this on the forum
On my old MSI 5600xt graphics card, the display works on the DVI cable only up to 1280x1024.

It doesn't confirm anything, just wanted to share that it is a difference between the cards. Some might work and some might not.

how can I find out the limitations of my card via DVI?

Why would I need to add the res myself if my card can support it?

And if I do add a res myself, is that bad for my card/monitor?

I can get 1680x1050 via Analog with no problems whatsoever.

Oh - one intresting thing - when I force 1680x1050 via DVI, my monitor will display it, but it's as if it's too big for my monitor. I scoll my cursor to the right of the screen and when I do, the screen "drags" across! Why is this happening?

Bongo, some companies put more effort into cards than others. In general the DVI support is limited on older cards. Who knows.

The FX series was in general. FX5200-5700 were horrible cards, the FX5900 was better but still horrible. NVIDIA didn't get back in the lead until the 6x00 series.

True enough! I had an FX5500 (it's still lying around somewhere) and those cards were horrid. They did some stuff good, but other stuff (like smoke effects) would just bog the card down bad. In fact, I switched to ATI for 2 generations because of of it.

I've had a...long list of graphic cards (7 to be exact)
5900XT, 9800pro, 9800XT, 6800NU, 6800GT, and now another 6800NU. Thank you for shorting my cards abit...

out of all of them the Asus 6800GT 256MB card was the best in the land.
