Is there any way to get uniws to work with a nocd version of a SW:KOTOR executable (like the one available from gamecopyworld.com)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Technically, yes; in practical reality, no.

The hex edits in UniWS are based on the disc version executable. It would be possible to figure out and make the appropriate edits for the cracked exe. However, the people with the requisite knowledge to do so are either no longer active here or are unlikely to spend time re-hacking a game which is already working in a form which has been an acceptable solution for a majority of users.

In short, just play it with the CD, and if you don't have the CD then don't play it at all.

Hi there, thanks for replying. The cracked executable is a necessity for anyone trying to run the game under linux/wine because securom causes a crash on startup. Guess I'm stuck with 1024*768 then, damn.

Maybe you can find a NOCD of the specific executable needed for UniWS?

Hes found that, The problem is when you edit the exe to remove the DRM it obviously changes the file making it no longer usable with UniWS.

The issue is that the hex strings probably won't match Ibrin, regardless of which version the crack is based on. Depending on how the executable is cracked, the byte code may be entirely different; there's no guarantee the appropriate hex strings used for the UniWS edits will be the same. Sometimes they are, most times they aren't.

It's the same reason UniWS for KOTOR 2 only works on a cracked version - because that's the version that the person who figured out the hex edits was working with.

In the case of KOTOR, the hex strings were found based on normal retail executable. It is possible that one of the cracked exe's matches the retail code closely enough for UniWS's hex edits to work without modification, but not guaranteed. The crack version's resolution code could be just a few bytes offset or different - but that's enough to render them incompatible with the UniWS edits.

I tell you what. No promises, but if I have a chance I'll see if I can figure out the edits for one of the cracked exes. If they're close enough to the established strings, I should be able to do them. However, if they're not easily identifiable - as in there are significant changes to the byte code - then there's potentially a lot of effort needed to track them down and I'm not willing to invest the time for that (sorry).

Much obliged Sweetz.

I'd just like to correct my previous statement, having done a bit of googling - not all linux users experience the same issue as me, although quite a few seem to have the same problem. Original executable crashes the game, cracked one works like a charm for some of us, but not all. :(

Ok I just took a look at one of the cracked exes, specifically the 1.03 by FairLight. All the appropriate hex strings were there (it looks like it was cracked with only minor changes ot the byte code) and UniWS modified the file successfully. I ran the game using the modified EXE and it behaved as expected.

Is your problem that UniWS won't allow you to patch or that the game doesn't work after modification by UniWS? If it's the latter then it's a problem with Wine or something else and not the modification.

Now that's strange. What happens is when I point uniws to a cracked executable it won't allow me to set a desired resolution (1440x900) and the "Patch" button is grayed out. If I cheat it by pointing it to the original executable, entering the resolution and then replacing the original file with the cracked one it fails with something like "Unable to write file" or something to that effect.

Would it be possible for you to upload the file patched for my resolution somewhere like Rapidshare?

Ok, strike that. I installed XP in a virtual machine and patched the exe there, worked fine.

Thanks for all your help!
