Post subject: | Eyefinity with Displayport to VGA adapter setup question |
Hi guys, I am looking to set myself up with a 3x24" eyefinty rig running off a radeon 5870 card. After doing lots of reading in this fantastic forum it seems that running 2 monitors on dvi and one using a HP displayport to vga adapter is the way to go with least potential for trouble. I have a couple of queries regarding this setup: 1) Does it matter which particular monitor runs off the VGA adapter? For example does this setup work with the VGA monitor as one of the non primary left or right positions or does it have to be the primary middle monitor for the eyefinity to work properly? 2) Can the eyefinity rig running a VGA adapter montior handle 3 x 1920x1200 or is it only confirmed up to 3 x 1920x1080? Thankyou |

Hi there! I have recently purchased one of these, which is up to 2560x1600 resolution supposedly, but windows7 detects my BenQ G2420HD panel as minitabletVGA and maximum resolution up to 1600x1200, then it somehow manages to change to 1600x900 when I try to make a monitor group with 10.5b drivers (10.5 official does not work....), and it is really pity that you cannot make any custom resolution as for example in ForceWare drivers even for old Geforce 5000 series... |

I think the VGA adapter is the way to go to save money not to save trouble. The Dual link DVI Digital adapters are better over all especially at higher resolutions. 1) It doesnt matter which monitor is used but probably better to keep a digital display in the middle as the picture will be sharper. 2) Most VGA adapters seem to be 1920 x 1080 maximum with an option for 1920 x 1200 by reducing the pixel clock but it is very close to the limits of a single link device. The HP adapter specifications are not listed anywhere that I could see so maybe contact them about it. Using a single link DVI cable on my 1920 x 1200 monitor provides a maximum refresh rate of 56Hz instead of the normal 60Hz with a dual link cable. |

It seems the HP DP-VGA adapter has quite a high rate of succes, at least two users on this forum have it up and running! Just ask MEATH ! Thanks all for the info. I had already been through those threads Johnny but just didnt feel confident that I fully understood the situation. It's a fair bit of money to step out and put one of these setups together and I have been hesitant because of the issues people have been having with unstable adapters. That is a good point about the limitation of VGA. It makes sense to stick with 1920x1080 rather than pushing it out to its max limit of 1920x1200. If only ATI had put 3 dvi connectors on the 5870 :D |
