I've got a really odd problem. I've been using my Eyefinity setup without problem for 18 months now. I usually run in an extended desktop mode for work, web browsing & single-monitor games, and have a separate Eyefinity group preset that I activate when I want to play widescreen games.

I've not run anything in Eyefinity mode for about 3 weeks, and when I activated my preset today, instead of a nice 5760x1080 res screen, I ended up with mirrored displays. I tried running through the steps in the Catalyst Control Centre to create an Eyefinity display group but it didn't behave as I expected, and once again I ended up with mirrored screens. I can't think of much I've done since the last time, other than install the AMD Hydravision module, so I tried System Restore to roll back to a previous restore point which, frustratingly, failed for some reason apparently unconnected to the AMD drivers.

My next step was to uninstall my existing drivers, and download and install the latest version. However I get the same weird results. This is what happens:

1) I start in an extended desktop mode, where Windows thinks I have 3 1920x1080 monitors. The Windows taskbar spans the middle desktop. This is my normal working environment.

2) I run CCC. It can see my 3 monitors fine:

3) I click on Create Eyefinity Display Group then on the middle display, get the message "The only displays that can be added to the display group belong to extended desktops. Click Continue to disable the extended desktops" and click [Continue]

4) . My left & right screens go black and I get prompted to select a layout. I choose 3 x 1 and hit [Continue]

5) My left & right screens now show a mirror of my main screen, and CCC just shows one large screen. This never happened before! CCC used to show one wide rectangle with dashed lines showing where the monitor breaks were, if I recall correctly.

6) If I go back to Desktop Management it now shows one screen.

One other thing I've just thought of that may be relevant; the other thing that I've done since it last worked correctly is disconnect all the cables at the back, pull out the base unit, and install 2 extra sticks of RAM in the motherboard. I made sure to reconnect the monitors to the same ports they were connected to before, though.

What on earth is going on, and how do I get back to a nice 5760x1080 resolution display for my gaming?

I'm stumped. Any help extremely appreciated!

you made a CCC driver update right? This fucks up the presets most of the time.

So, after you created an Eyefinity Setup and it didn't work. Did you try to Deactivate it and Create a new one? This works for me.

I got the problem before I touched the driver. But when I did remove then re-install the latest driver, then yes, I did delete my presets and try to re-create them and it is in fact trying to create the Eyefinity preset that doesn't work, as I described in my original post.

What really puzzles/annoys me is that I've created an Eyefinity display group many times in the past, and it's never behaved this way before. I consider myself technically competent (I'm a software engineer by day) and despite having spent hours on this problem I can't figure it out. The hardware seems to work fine as far as I can tell, so it must be a driver/config problem but I can't for the life of me see what it is.

It seems that I need to resort to a clean install of Windows to see if that helps, but I've been trying to avoid that because it'll take hours to get my system back to normal (there goes my weekend!). At least I'll end up with a cleaner system.

Thanks for showing an interest, I appreciate the input.

This sounds familiar... Please try the following an let me know if it works:

Before you click the create eyefinity display group button in CCC, you need to only have your center monitor activated. So disable both extended desktop and duplicated monitors by going to 'screen resolution' (rightclick on desktop). There all but your center monitor have to be greyed out. Now you can create the eyefinity display group without problems hopefully. If you have the option of disabling a group you have already created, click on that first before you create a new group.

If you still wind up with three duplicate monitors, go into 'screen resolution' and sad the slider to 5760x1080.

Interestingly that did exactly the same as my initial attempt, i.e. I ended up with mirrored displays. And in that situation, the screen resolution slider would only go up to 1920x1080.

I've ended up re-installing Windows, which was a bit extreme but it let me have a good clean out and get a new boot disk in place, so it wasn't wasted effort. Fortunately the re-installation fixed the Eyefinity problem, and now everything works as it should. Yay!

Thanks for the help.
