Leave it on aspect and then try the scaling in GFX control panel again. :)
With the old drivers, scaling worked at least to some point, though the black bars was on top/bottom instead of the sides. Something is interfering.
What you also can do, is to turn on the "show resolutions that the monitor doesn't support" or something like that (its from memory), that eases up on the use of EDID if I remember correctly.

I need to buy a new Nvidia card to do some troubleshooting for members soon...

Edit:

I need to leave now. Hopefully someone can help you further. I'll step in when I come back. :)

A new DVI cable won't make it work. Its a digital signal and as long as your other DVI-D cable that you use according to OP works, a new one wouldn't make any change.

If neither using other drivers or overscan works, then I'm stumped. :( Anyone else have some ideas?

Okay, ive installed win7 now and so on and NOW I got that option I only had when I used 800x600 so.. yea..
But when I choose "Use NVIDIA scaling with fixed-aspect ratio" and press apply, it auto changes to "use my display's built-in scaling"

so.. I dunno whats wrong :e
