FM,

I will take my time with this purchase. The prices vary, wildly. There's a 24" Acer that is very popular here, but I've read that the blacks are not very black, while the screen bleeds. It's slick looking and so I understand the hook, but performance is what's important.

From all I've read, I've come to the conclusion that, as with all things, there's no such thing as a perfect display. Unfortunately, as noted before, those rated highest garnish some pretty high prices, all above a $1,000 and at this price level, a pretty nice computer can be had, be it desktop or laptop.

The room configuration is ok, as the window behind me has an awning, but I'm not sure how a glossy finished screen would work in the environment. I plan to put shades on the windows, which should help.

Yes, it is as you say, there are complaints about the Dells, about input lag.

The new Acers look slick, which is a worry! lol I don't mind spending more, as I appreciate quality and tend to keep equipment for some time. I'll check out the BenQ's and Samsung's also. I had found a nice Viewsonic, but it appears the ad has been pulled (26" for $519).

I'll keep you posted and thanks.

John

Abram, FM,

I've just been told, if there's no mistake, will be $399 cnd, on Thursday.

Any thoughts, feedback would be appreciated.

thanks,

John

I didn't really need to look it up, but that is a mere 6 bit TN panel display. It may be better to go a bit smaller and get a PVA if you are particular about image quality.

As for shades on the windows, you may want to consider venetian blinds if you don't want to get something atypically dark and drab looking. I have venetian blinds on my large living room window where my PC is located.

I louver the vanes backwards which makes the small amount of light they let in when fully or near fully closed reflect onto the ceiling for pretty good indirect lighting. It also keeps the convex side, which is the side that collects most of the dust, facing the window where it is not exposed to it nearly as much. Thus they stay much cleaner.

FM,

bummer; I tought I may have found a nice unit, for a good price.

I've just returned from the local LG dealer and apparently the new catalogue just arrived. New panels are on the way, S-ISP, by August of this year. He explained the new technologies, the changes in the panels and from what I understood, it could be worth the wait, especially as it will make current models even more attractively priced.

Thanks for the window suggestions. I have similar blinds on about 2/3rds of my windows, but plan on using a different type for my office, as the window in here is covered with an awning.

I can't believe how quickly technology is chaging, nor the impact it's all having on social relations. Sometimes I think it's a little frightening.

Again, thanks!

John

If you don't want to bother looking up the spec and/or aren't sure if the spec you find is accurate, there's always a few ways to be pretty sure a panel is TN. If the manufacturer lists it as 160 degree viewing angle in either vert or horiz plane, or the response time is 2 or 3 ms, it's most likely going to be a TN, esp if the price is very low.

Hadn't heard about LG IPS units coming out. I'm going to keep an eye out for those. It would be very cool if they offered something like a 16:9 26" monitor with optional HD tuner. LG makes the best tuners, though at this point I'd settle for just a 16:9 IPS in that size.

(EDITED)
Woot, I think I just hit the jackpot on Google. Here is a blog talking about a new panel tech called e-IPS, a detuned IPS without any noticeable loss in performance. Best thing is the price is WAY lower (touted to be same as TN) and they'll show up in smaller sizes, so no more settling for TNs in the 22" size.

I just hope they make ones larger than 23" though, preferably at least 25.5".

FM,

Thanks for the tip, a useful one! Regarding the link, I was carried away by its price and features (also I always liked Viewsonic).

It was just by chance that I stopped at the LG store to ask about the 2600hp; it was then that he explained that all the models, in that model range, are now discontinued, that these new units are coming out, many with S-ISP panels. Today, he said, is the first day they've been notified by LG. The unit he showed me, I believe, has a tuner. The current MSRP is $700 cnd; but, August is far enough away and the economy unstable enough that it might change by then. It looked to be a beautiful unit, at 26". There were several S-ISP model sizes, however. I asked if I could keep the brochure, but they said it was the only one they had.

Yes, 25.5 and up would be nice; the size I'm aiming for (vision weakening).

Thanks for the link, will have a read. I'm probably going to wait this out, would be willing to pay $700, if it is, in fact, worthwhile.

P.s. I've just checked the LG sites; none of the models I saw in the new brochure are listed.
