Damn, I missed these 2 announcements over the past few weeks...too damn busy with work, ugh!!

LG announced their 34" curved 21:9 display first:
https://pcmonitors.info/lg/lg-34uc97-cu ... e-display/
(check out the link to the Korean LG site for more info!!)

And then Dell announced their version of the same 34" curved display...at the same time they announced the return of the Alienware Area-51 PC.
http://na.alienwarearena.com/news/the-r ... re-area-51

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/dell-u ... 27581.html

The LG doesn't have a VESA mount, so I will be curious if the Dell has somehow incorporated one into their version.

I've been waiting for the LG 34um95 to get back in stock at retailers, but since I read this, I'm glad I missed the first batch. I want CURVED now :rockout:

Found a few videos from IFA...unless Dell or LG price it way beyond what I think it will be (1100-1500), I will treat myself for Xmas :rockout:

Initial pricing estimates in Europe seem to be around $1100 euros, so a price under $1500 US seems do-able.

I grabbed my wallet and it lost the argument, thus I now have a new 34UC97.
I haven't yet had time to walk it through a battery of games, movies and productivity...I hope to do so soon. Since I already have a Dell 29" 2560x1080, I'm familiar with the 21:9 format and all the pluses and minuses. This new LG is no different of course...just more pixels :)

First few things I have noticed so far.
The curve is subtle...you don't really notice it when viewing from the front...only when looking at the monitor from above. I would be curious to see what a bigger arc looks and feels like...perhaps with OLED in time or with a projector and screen.
The colors have that usual IPS pop...I'm sure the accuracy is a bit off, but I'm not a stickler for that, as long as it is in the ballpark, I'm pretty happy.
The lack of a VESA mount does seem like quite an oversight on LG's part. I read there is a version (34UC87?) that should have a VESA mount and of course we know the Dell will.
I'm not sold on the champagne color on the back of the monitor...not my style.
The backlight bleed on black content is pretty bad...no joke, I have never seen a monitor with this much light bleed. I tried watching a few movies just now and I had to zoom in XBMC so there were no black corners visible, the light bleed was THAT distracting.

And there it is, the light bleed might cause me to return it. I can tweak colors for accuracy, I can tweak games to handle the wider view format but I can't tweak or fix the light bleed.

I will try to post a pic but for right now, I would hold off on ordering/purchasing one until you can see one in person or at least view the pics once I get them up.

I have a good assortment of games, let me know if there any you want me to check out.
Cheers!!

I wouldn't mind
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2688398/ ... splay.html

Seems to come with some good ports, but I would prefer 120Hz.

So, I returned the LG 34uc97...I just couldn't live with the awful backlight issue in all 4 corners, 3 of the corners were just plain silly. I'm surprised it passed QC before shipping out!!

I will post some pics so others can see and be forewarned. If you really want 21:9 and curved, I would wait for rev 2 or even rev 3 of the displays.

On a related note, after looking to see what else was out there for new monitors, I decided to go a totally different route and picked up an LG 4k TV, model 49UB8500 and am running it via HDMI 2.0 with 2xGTX970's.

Holy crap is it great fun to run at a 4k resolution, 60hz refresh, max out the eye candy settings in the games (I turn off AA...you don't really need it at 4k res, imho) and enjoy a 49" PC monitor :rockout:

I will add more info on this to the 4k discussion section.

Here are some pics of the backlight issue I experienced.
Please note they are taken with an ipad, not a camera...but they still show the backlight issue rather well, which is to say bad!!

Do you think it was your batch or just the model in general? I'd be curious to get one down the line.
