What's wrong with projectors being portrait, as opposed to landscape? Wouldn't the heat still just rise out of the vents?


In order to get high lumens the bulbs are insanely hot. They have to design the projector housing and air cooling to properly account for it. Typically, that means that a projector is configured only to handle floor and ceiling orientation for mounting. 90 degree portrait you'll either burn up your bulb or projector in many cases. You ask any major projection manufacturer to use their projectors outside their specified orientation configurations and often times they'll say it voids warranty. Inquire with any and all consumer marketed projector manufacturers and I seriously doubt any single one of them will tell you they certify any of their projectors work properly in portrait mode. 99% of them will instantly shut down because they sense either improper orientation or temperatures outside specification.

It's rather unfortunate, because 1920 pixel height is sexy when used with multiple projectors. I do know BenQ W1000 won't shut down though and work for at least 12 hours. BenQ specifically said NOT to do this when asked, but it works. Who knows how bad the orientation change effects the bulb life though. With projectors it's all about the temperatures.

What I'd like to do is find a set of 1080p projectors to test this on and run it as my main system and just see how long they last through regular use. The only way people will start using projectors in portrait mode is to have data on success and failures.

5x1 landscape would easily push the FOV over 180 degree mark. Most games don't like that and would probably CTD from the camera code. Plus, I know the 5000-series had a upper pixel width limit of 8000? pixels. Anyone know if it's the same on the 6000-series or if the pixel count is wider?

Frankly, I think 5x1 portrait mode looks awesome. I'd show 5x1 portrait 1080p projector if I could get a sponsor on the projectors. I know BenQ W1000's would work. We tested one portrait rotated at the AMD 6800-series launch event to see if they'd handle the thermals of being rotated. :wink:

If it's not possible, then I guess 3 is fine for me. Portrait makes your monitors almost half as wide and you have even more bezels in the way. It just looks counter-productive to me.

Well it goes back to a couple of things.

3x2 L Versus 5x1 P

3x2 gives you a nice bulging bezel cutting the screen in half horizontally. Right in the middle of your vision.
5x1 Give you a bigger vertical pixel height, and bigger screen real-estate without having your picture cut in half. It also allows for a reticule that isn't split in anyway.

5x1 P Versus 3x1 L
5x1 P is generally wider (Physically) than 3x1 L of the same panel. It's also taller, which give a crisper picture.

3x1 P Versus 5x1 P
5x1 P is just wider. With both you get the same crispness.

One other thing to consider with going 5x1P. I have a large number of games that have the fixes found here at the WSGF to run at my 5040x1050 res. Doom 3, Quake 4, R6lv2 that I still play alot of and IL2 with San's IL2 fov changer. This is a few of the games with fixes that I play.

If one is to get into 5x1P gaming (I Want to) I think that these games that are fixed to play at the 16x9 and 16x10 aspect ratio are not gonna ever get fixed at 5x1p res. I don't know though. Its not bad to go from 5040x1050 on 3 landscape monitors to 1680x1050 to play a game that does not support surround. However to would be a nightmare to change your desk around to go from 5x1p to 3x1L to play a surround game where there is not a fix for it for 5x1P.

Is my reasoning sound? Will some of the heavy hitters here that are brilliant with there fixes take care of some of these games for 5x1P.

Well eons ago when i had a 5x1P setup, if there was a game that didn't support that aspect ratio I did 1 of two things. Either play on the middle 3 (16:10 ratio with 3x1P 16:9 Monitors) or I would pull the middle monitor forward and rotate it.

I would also move the left most and right most monitors forward and rotate them to play 3x1L if there was a game that just didn't like SoftTH (had to do it before this driver came out).

No. I gather you can only use 4 displays on the 6xxx series until displayport hubs become available next year (allowing you to connect multiple monitors to each of the displayport.. ports)

Only 2 ports out of the 2x DVI + 1x HDMI can be used at once. So no 5x1P on the current 6xxx cards for now..
