I updated Skyrim to 1.2 so I could use the new UW fix and maybe get better frames. The fix works, but now I can't look up or down. The Y sensitivity for the mouse in-game is so low it's practically locked. How is this a good idea in a game where you have to pick things off the ground a lot? I ran it without the UW fix and it's obviously the 1.2 Skyrim update. Is there any information about fixing this so I can look at the ground without running my mouse down the mouse pad 20 times? I'll have to revert to 1.1 for now.

is it possible that its using it as a seperate physx engine? i know if you have a seperate card it can do that, and if you left it on auto (the default) that may be the case.

Helifax, he is using a quad core cpu @ 3.2ghz, i highly doubt its not enough hehe. sure its no i7 but its plenty. 4gb ram is low, but again unless you using the custom launcher the game never really draws that much system memory anyway. i think the max i ever saw was close to 1.5. win7 takes up about a gig to a gig and a half to run. then you you another ~500mb for running your daily crap. leaving you with 2-2.5gb, should be ok really.

im leaning toward its being used for physx

Hi all,

I didn't mean the 480 was a problem, just a curiosity. I think it would be great if nVidia made the drivers use the 480's 1.5 gigs of ram...I have the physx indicator turned on and there is no indication of physx being used in Skyrim that the NV drivers notice. The 480 is in there for physx. As for my system, yeah she's old but she's been great. I plan on building a 6 core ivy bridge around the 590 (maybe get another 590). As for my system ram amount, it's been plenty with everything turned up at that monster res without a hiccup.

Edit: I'm not running any mods. I did turn on tree self shadows in the ini. though.

Edit: also the cores aren't being fully utilized, nor is sli being fully used...as it is in BF3.

Thanks Hayden for making my Skyrim GUI's usable on 3 moni's.

Surprisingly, game does and has run great on my older rig (except the 590 is new) regardless of the Skyrim .exe version. Only problem I have is low (20s) FPS in towns/villages at 5670x1200. At 1920x1200 on one monitor no low FPS. Memory use on vid cards via. precision only moves in big chunks based on how much AA I use. All settings on and maxed out.

Precision says my 3rd GPU (GTX480) memory is also being allocated in the same amounts as the 590's memory. Is this true? Do the drivers use the 480's memory as extra as needed?
I have one bug that I know of. After killing the first dragon and absorbing it, the game still reports I have collected zero souls. I can still use shouts though.

Using .8 now no probs as 1.2 broke .4a for me.

My only question is, what mods are you running? When I installed the realistic water and rain mod, my performance tanks when there is a lot of dynamic water around. Like when I went back to the marsh area, with a lot of visible hot springs (namely coming down from the hill where the Dragon icon is on your map, lower right), I would hit 15 fps at 5760x1080, then to verify it was a mod I went back to 1920x1080 and the fps was the same, until I moved away from the area. Seriously, no setting changes would give me more then 15 fps no matter what. If you are running mods, it could be the culprit rather then your rig in general. I also have the periodic problem of towns giving me low fps, I am not a 100% certain as to the culprit but again I think it is mods because I usually get it in towns that have been re-textured, like Whiterun. I also think your RAM is a little low as well, you should be sporting at least 8gb on that dual channel memory board, especially if you are running HD mods and using the LAA.

Phsyx is not utilized in this game. The game uses the Havok physics engine and that is all CPU based, the CPU he is running is quad core so it should be able to handle Havok just fine.

Well you are not going to see to the see game take full advantage of all your CPU's cores all the time. The reason being is because this engine is programmed for dual core primarily, the fact Skyrim recommends quad core is primarily for Havok. As far as the SLI load, that is on nvidia. I don't think they have sussed out the full potential for Skyrim on SLI and that could be because they used a similar profile to what was used for FONV or Oblivion, just to cut corners and get it out the door quickly.

As far as you not running any mods, has me a little stumped as to what is causing the problem. If you turn off the tree shadows, what happens? Also, I think the new patch killed the performance a little. I just think no proof aside from the mods, but I can't go back to 1.1 save files after you have saved with 1.2. )c:

Also if you are looking to get a 6 core, you might want to hold off a little longer. With the X79 coming out there are many models that have 2 8pin additional power connections and if you look at the dye of the new i7-3960X, you will see that there are two additional spots that have nothing in them. This all adds up to me thinking that there is a 8 core coming, and by spring we might hear something on it. If you are wanting to upgrade sooner though, the i7-3960X is still a damn good CPU to get.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that many people reported having troubles using Skyrim HD and that I have had a few CTD, along with a friend of mine who is vanilla as well. That's why I think 1.2 broke something other then game play mechanics.

EDIT 2: Actually you can go back to ver 1.1 but you have to have a few other files. I have verified my 1.2 save files will load with these 1.1 file replacements. I am going to check my performance here is a second. Here are the files:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2263471

EDIT 3: During my test my fps went back up to 37 to 42 fps in that marsh area I described when only getting 15fps max even at 1920x1080, to make sure it wasn't a fluke I tested in both night and mid day lighting. My shadow flickering when I spring is GONE, so it was the patch all along. I still have the backwards flying dragons but they are the ones I couldn't collect souls from before and after the patch, no big loss for me. Go back to ver 1.1 if you guys are having poor FPS.

I wasn't referring to the CPU:) but the somehow limited memory... only 4Gbs. Theoretically it should be enough...practically well..Windows has a weird way of spanning in the RAM and afterwards dumping on your HDD (you know the pagefiles) which kills your performance... Other than this try to remove the GTX480 and run only the GTX590...maybe is a driver issue.

Physx is not used in this game..so do not worry about it..:)

Kayden, what did you do to fix the sprinting shadows problem?

I am running v1.1, with Haden's v0.4B injector, the 4GB executable and a few minor tweaks to the shadows to stop the normal shimmer bug.

If I can get this fixes I'll be well pleased! :)

With ver 1.1 I had to fiddle with "fShadowDistance" and "fShadowLODStartFade". The "fShadowDistance" default for Ultra is 8000, I ended up going to 10000, and the "fShadowLODStartFade" is 200.0000 for Ultra, then I went to 3000.0000. The flickering started after I enabled tree shadows, and giving that extra distance helped me. The same result could not be achieved with ver 1.2 for some reason.

EDIT: These are located in SkyrimPrefs.ini under [Display]. If you want to keep note of what the default is, just start a new line under it, starting with // this way the info after is not read by the game.

Hell I pretty much get the performance I expect for my system besides what else I would get with some optimizations of the drivers/engine by the powers that be.

I'll give the tweaks a try when I look into it next. I am overall pleased with what I do get considering all the problems people seem to be having on the steam forums. It seems like a lot of probs are with guys on newer systems and only one moni. I did check out task manager a few minutes ago with my typical res and things turned to max and the exe was only using around 800 megs of ram (and precision reports 4608 megs of vid ram used). I think I'll go ask about the 480's memory use on the nvidia forums.

Thanks guys for the time and effort.
