Group,
I just got my first widescreen PC, with 1680 x 1050 resolution; and in spite of the fact that City of Heroes supposedly supports this resolution, I have not been able to get it to work properly. I can run it in "windowed" mode, and use the full screen with proper aspect ratio -- but frame rate is obviously slower in windowed mode. When I try to select the 1680 x 1050 resolution, I get an error message on startup:

"Resolution 1680 x 1050 not supported in fullscreen mode. Defaulting to 800 x 600", and it does indeed default to that mode. Since there's plenty of widescreen gaming gurus here, I hope somebody has the answer to how to get 1680 x 1050 running properly in fullscreen mode.

I wish I could help you. I'm only running it at 1440x900. What card are you using, and what is the memory on it?

That should have enough RAM to drive that high of a res. Have you tried a smaller res at fullscreen? Something like 1440x900.

I tried a lower res, and got exactly the same error message. The game just refuses to start in the fullscreen mode at any "widescreen" resolution. Even 1440 x 900, which I know others are running at, refuses to start in that mode -- I just get the error message window about that mode being unsupported and the game defaults to 800 x 600.

I gave up and returned the Sager notebook; I replaced it with an HP with the 1680 x 1050 screen and an Nvidia 128 MB card. Now City of Heroes runs great at either the 1440 x 900 or 1680 x 1050 resolution with no tweaking required. Others may wish to beware of this issue; I don't know if it's the ATI video card, the Sager notebook, or both that caused the problem.

Glad to hear you got it working. What server are you on? I'm on Virtue, and a member of a military themed Supergroup called Assault Recon. You can check out our site (still somewhat under construction) at http://www.assaultrecon.com. If you'd like to join up, let me know...
