Good find Jopon, I'm trying to get the sourcecode for that from shadowfrench, I'll try to make a stand alone version of it.

@Squ1zzy, Agreed its just zoomed out but its far far far better then stretched.

It still is stretched. And always will be unless someone adds code for multiple aspect ratios.

This is not a fov-related change anyway. You are changing the camera distance not the camera zoom. Hence the perspective changes.

So you are changing the perspective of a stretch. This does nothing for widescreen.

Actually, it's both.

I could possibly also add in some calculations for aspect ratios (assuming this game uses Direct3D or something and is not all 2D).

If you can do that from a map hack that would be an impressive feat of coding.

The game is fully 3d, except the interface.

Great. Do you have a tool for World of Warcraft? I know it's a completely different engine, but I thought I'd take the opportunity.

WoW already has the option to change the maximum camera distance. It's in the advanced interface options. So you can enjoy the widescreen benefits without the Horizontal - issues. The only problem, albeit a small one, is that your character and things around it appear smaller.

That program is actually nice for adjusting the visible part of the map, and there is a much more recent version up at the Maphack web site. I have no interest in playing online so that part isn't an issue either.

One thing I could use some help with - does anyone know where some instructions are? The Maphack site doesn't seem to have any, and there are several things I'd like to be able to do, like save the settings. Every time you re-start the game you need to re-do the Maphack settings. I think. Or maybe you don't. Either way I was curious about getting a user guide for the program. Thanks.

I've already tested this. It does NOT help to change the camera zoom distance. You only gain 15% - 20% of the vertical area back.

Widescreen is achieved through a registry hack.

Find:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareBlizzard EntertainmentWarcraft IIIVideo

Edit:
reswidth = xxxx
resheight = yyyy

as appropriate.

?
i don't get this

why would anyone want to play on widescreen resolution. . . pretty sure we're on here to not play on that

so,
even if you set it at a 4:3 resolution it still stretches?

~_~..
