Well I came here to ask pretty much the same thing as OP.

I'm coming into some free money and along with a PC upgrade, i thought I'd get a 42-50 inch for another PC screen, but I'm stuck on whether to fo with plasma or LCD> I know plasmas are preferred for movies, but it'll primarily be for gaming. I plan to get a current model , so burn-in shouldn't be an issue.
Anyone have personal experience on this? Of course, i'll get a 1080p, maybe 120hz. Budget will hopefully be under $1500. Hopefully i can it in time for boxing week.

I have a 32 in tv running at 1080p and I love it.

That said, I would not go any bigger size than 32. It will only spread or stretch your resolution and look uglier. You cant get a bigger face full of graphics than sitting 3 ft from a 32 in. (unless you go multi monitor)

I am using this toshiba and it has a built in gaming mode and a 8 ms response.

I love it , but 1920 x 1200 is (1080p) as high as you can go , so you will not see a better picture at 40 inches, only a waste. I have done alot of things resolution wise, and your not doing yourself any favors trying to use a 47 inch tv on a pc , and expecting it to look better than 32 inch tv. The picture at 1920 x 1200 is AMAZING though at 32. you will LOVE it.

also I am looking for a thread of others that are using tv as pc monitor.

TVs are starting to advance faster than monitors now, they already have 240hz LCD TV's out now.... we just got the first set of 120hz LCD monitors.

yes, but as you are aware, the 120Hz monitors are 120Hz input, the 240Hz TV's are 200Hz in the UK (PAL format), and they have 60Hz inputs, so have input/ processing lag, and can have a lot of un-desired effects when running as a PC gaming monitor.

How about this? It's a 32" 120hz 1080p for $650. Does this have true 120hz, and how can you tell?

Far as i can tell from some research, any benefits from 120hz won't really be seen on games. And if it DID, all that post-processing would give you input lag. The VGA port on TV's turns off any image processing, some color adjustment ability, adn torhe features. If the signal leaving yoru computer is anythign but the monitor's native res, that will create lag, too. But i think for a lot of newer HDTVs' input lag is minimal through HDMI as long as teh resolution is the native. I've picked through a lot of models and have slimmed the list down to two. And boxing day is still taking too long.

OT: it seem thre's a ATI 5xxx shortage and I'm finding i may have to wait for perhaps weeks to get my card :( starting to think i may be better off not waiting for a sale. I really wish my town had a good (well stocked) computer store.

I don't think even well stocked stores have them! All the Fry's in 500 Mile Radius from my house are out!

Yes Abram is right , the 120 htz wont help and may hurt.

a good 1080 p tv with 60hz refresh will be a REAL nice monitor

also , There is no comments on newegg because they just changed the model #, but its the same unit that was getting RAVE reviews before, from gamers all telling each other about this awesome tv thats able to be used as a monitor.

all you would need is this adapter for full htmi cable supportage.
